Guava Splash Electrolyte

Continuing the trend of naming amphibians after their transport containers, the tiny chorus froglet has been named "Guava Splash Electrolyte" (Guava Splash was the flavor of knock-off gatorade we had a bottle from, and Electrolyte just seems cute for such a small creature.)

The other amphibians have included "Broccoli Cheddar Bomb," the late fire-bellied toad, who was given to me in a soup container, and of course "Summer 'Berry Mad' Refresher" who came home in a Starbucks Summer Berry Refresher cup (but looked real mad about it.)

Mostly I just keep calling him Tiny Frog, though.

("He" is arbitrary - the sexes look pretty much identical until males develop a vocal sac to start calling.)

Transferred to a better habitat than a knock-off gatorade bottle.

Exploring.

I had to pretty immediately adjust the setup and move the pond, since he promptly wedged himself between the pond and the side of the terrarium. It's now a bit farther from the edge. His favorite spot is still huddling under the lip of the pond in the upper left corner, though.

A very cute picture Alex took last week, climbing the plant.

He's been eating fruit flies dusted with a vitamin powder. They're definitely the right size for such a tiny little frog, but man are they a pain to deal with! It was a relief when he started eating them, though.

He's also gotten a few very small caterpillars from my mom's garden. He is much more enthusiastic about those than the fruit flies! (My mom doesn't use any sorts of pesticides, so I feel safe feeding things from her garden. Things from around the apartment or anything, not so much.)

I am hoping he will thrive, and am relieved that he's eating reliably. I'll be glad if I can get him big enough to do crickets instead of fruit flies, ha.

Tuesday, August 05: Corwina Park

Still catching up on posts!

A couple of weeks ago jesus how has it been a couple of weeks we decided to try another new-to-us park. This one borders Lair o' the Bear, but is actually a Denver park, rather than a county park. (Denver has a few mountain parks that they own and maintain, even though the mountains are well outside the city.) It's a bit farther up the road, but we drove past it on our detour the day we were coming back from Centennial Cone.

Taking a look at the info page on it, it looked like there was a decent 3-4 mile total out-and-back trail up to a spot called "Panorama Point," so hopefully there'd be a nice view. So we headed up!

...And it was "up." The trail is moderate difficulty, but it does pretty immediately head up, haha.

I've been disappointed this year that we really haven't seen any snakes. We finally saw one on this hike!

A really nice big, healthy looking garter snake! So cute.

The whole area was very pretty, a nice forest trail. The trail mostly paralleled a narrow little creek.

I was very taken by all the moss around the creek.

Fourteen more pictures:

Bella! I thought she looked cute next to the flowers.

The narrow creek. It was wider at some points, narrower or even entirely dry at others.

Detour around some big rocks.

Beebalm!

A little pond skater in a calm part of the creek.

Another shot of the snake. :) With his head in the sunbeam, haha. The snake was quite long, probably 18 inches or so? I was happy to see one that's clearly doing so well!

We also saw a bunch of woodpeckers! A hairy woodpecker.

A second one. There were at least three we saw at the same time.

A dramatic hollow stump. Very picturesque.

Alex was having some neck issues, and Bella was getting a bit warm, so we took a break for a couple minutes.

Bella set herself up on the trail. Toll road: must pet to pass. (Kidding. She was very good about coming off the trail when someone did come pass us. Even a couple of dogs.)

Not a great picture, but laying down on one of the branches, a black squirrel! (You can see his little ear against the tree trunk.) We rarely get black squirrels here (I've seen them elsewhere, but not much here! We get red squirrels, and sometimes grey ones, but black ones are a rarity.)

I liked all the little baby trees growing in this meadow.

A little bird! I think it's a junco, which are a winter-only bird down in the city, but sometimes stick around year-round at higher elevations.

We also saw so many of these little chipmunks. So cute!

Bella was still a little warm (it really wasn't too terribly hot, but it was humid, and it was all uphill). Wanting to let her cool down, we cut through one of the meadows along the trail to get back to the creek, which we could hear, but not see.

Where we found my favorite of the day...

*_* Tiny chorus frog froglet.

And well... I did have an unused habitat, from before we moved Berry Mad into the bigger one... And boreal chorus frogs are one of the native species it is legal to keep...

It's so small.

After this we turned around and headed back, since we were carrying precious (tiny) cargo.

We'll have to go back another day to see if we can make it all the way up to the promised "panorama point."

Greeley Kennel Club FastCAT: Part 2!

The whole dog show up in Greeley, where Bella ran a FastCAT on Thursday, ran from Thursday through the weekend.

Since she'd had a chance to rest for a couple of days, Alex decided to take her back today.

She did it!

Her first time was really good. Her second one wasn't great, but Alex said she was slowing down at the end of it. It was a hot day again, so not terribly surprising. He said they had some kiddie pools set up on the "go" line for the dogs to cool off in, but even so.

She was certainly completely full of energy again by the time I got home from work, lol.

Monday, August 04: Hewlitt Gulch (+ the Poudre River)

I'm... quite behind on posting.

Back on August 4th, we went up to the Poudre canyon. A long time ago (I think back in 2010, when Alex was visiting me before he moved here), we'd driven up the canyon and picked a random trailhead to take a walk at.

At the time, it was spring, which was lovely, as there were a lot of blooming trees. Fortunately/unfortunately, there was also quite a bit of snowmelt, and we hit a point before too long on the trail that would have required more wading than we were prepared for, so we had to turn back.

We'd intended to go back at some point, because it really was a very pleasant walk, going past some old house foundations, and through some nice bits of forest and meadows, but we never had.

...And then I could not remember anything about the name of the trailhead, haha. Luckily, I was able to just start looking up trail info, and there was a helpful description on the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers website that sounded like it matched up with what I remembered of the mystery trail, leading us to the "Hewlett Gulch" trail.

This was correct!

An extremely vibrant blue butterfly. Maybe a silvery blue? The different species are so similar to each other, I really couldn't say.

It's Bella! She had fun climbing around the little "cave" in the rocks there.

17 more pictures:

In someone's yard right up by the trailhead. Local wildlife! A bighorn sheep, an elk, some bear cubs as well as adult bears. Bigfoot. :)

Green pine cone.

A very dramatic dead tree.

Bella being so brave! (This was not really much of a "cave"; it only goes back a couple feet.)

I really liked some of the little rock wall near the faux cave. The way the moss streaked along the striations in the rock was neat.

It was a pretty hot day, so we tried to take it slow, with a bunch of little breaks in the shade, especially for Bella.

Lookit this little hotdog.

It was slightly further down the trail than I remembered, but here was the building foundation that I remembered from our previous trip.

The first time, 15ish years ago, there was a big snake over in the foundation. Sadly no snake this time.

More of that foundation.

This little moth landed on me. Apparently he liked my sweat, haha.

Picture looking back the way we'd come. You can see on that middle hill all the burned trees. There was a big fire that came through in I believe 2012, and you can still see a ton of the damage.

Ye olde telephone pole.

Another building foundation.

I wish it had been a bit more in focus, but a very tiny jumping spider, between the pine needles.

Shortly after this, poor Bella started getting a bit too warm. The creek that had blocked off part of the trail before was completely dry, so that wasn't an option to help cool down. We decided to head back (even though we hadn't gotten quite as far as hoped) and maybe find a river access point back down the canyon.

Some type of velvet ant, I think.

Back by the little cave earlier on the trail, we took another break in the slightly cooler spot in the shade. Bella still wanted to poke around.

Some kind of insect nest, probably a mud-dauber wasp of some sort.

Some wild phlox.

We headed back down the canyon, and picked one of the river access points to pull over and give Bella a chance to wade. We'd hoped the first trail would have the creek along it, but it was dry at all the points we encountered it.

She was very offended that we suggest such a thing! Lol, she was not impressed with the river, even in nice shallow areas, so we didn't stay long.

The river!

One more kind of silly picture:

Lol.

Habit Tracking: Week 30 (August 03 - August 09)

This week, a fancy sea slug sticker. This one was from the Tidal Treasures series by Aspenhearted.

This was a pretty good week. My days off were nice, with a good pair of hikes. I also got a decent amount of reading done, though not really as much as I wanted. Still no writing, and still needing to figure out how to find more time to devote to it. Did okay on goals for the week, minus the same stuff I never seem to get to. Definite money struggle this week, which will carry into next, but hey, we've still got a roof and food, so that's the thing that matters. Mildly frustrating end to the week with the truck battery failing, but it luckily worked out.

Goals for the week:

  • I did read more of Uprooted
  • I did not get my writing intro done
  • I did not work on my idea inventory
  • I did not update my reading page
  • We did go get crickets
  • We spent time outside
  • I did catch up on DW (though now I need to catch up even more...)
  • We did pay rent (though frustratingly they later messaged Alex, telling him it had not been paid... though a couple days later said that oops, yes, the account is current.)

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 5/7
  • Household Maintenance - 6/7
  • Physical Activity - 3/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 0/7
  • Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
  • Meta Work - 4/7
  • Personal Writing - 6/7
  • Other Creative Things - 3/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - mostly reading Uprooted, though Alex and I read a bit of Duma Key, and I read a small bit of my ebook side read
  • Attention to Media - 7/7 - Sunday had storm chase videos in the background as well as some travel videos; Monday storm chase and exploration videos in background, and listened to a couple eps of Re: Dracula; Tuesday was storm chase and paranormal videos; Wednesday we watched horror movie Finders Keepers which was very bad, then Twisters which I did like; Thursday had coverage of a fire in CA on in the background, and listened to a Re: Dracula ep and quite a bit of music; Friday had news coverage of a shooting in GA in the background for a while, watched an episode of Alone, and listened to Re: Dracula; Saturday listened to Re: Dracula, and later had exploration and travel vids in the background while I listened to music.
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 6/7

Greeley Kennel Club FastCAT:

Bella had a FastCAT today!

It was up in Greeley. Apparently there's a very big weekend dog... event going on. There were also in-hand conformation classes, and some agility courses, and things like that.

These pictures are from Alex:

She got her ribbons for her Trick Dog and her Canine Good Citizen from last week. ^^

Not her best times ever, but not terrible either. The 13+ second one was her first run. According to Alex, she really kicked into a higher gear about halfway through the second run; he thinks if she'd been at that speed for the whole run, she likely would have broken 10 seconds! 11+ is still pretty okay.

-

I've got so much to catch up on, but I'm struggling! I had three nights of not enough sleep. Sunday to Monday and Monday to Tuesday I was over at my mom and Taylor's on the tiny loveseat, getting up early once the cat was ready for breakfast (or wanted 3am pets). I felt pretty okay, and we went on a pretty good hike on Tuesday... but then Tuesday to Wednesday was also short on sleep, as I went to breakfast with my dad on Wednesday morning before work.

It was all good stuff that I was really glad to get to do... but it wiped me out worse than I expected. I fell asleep for what I hoped would be a 45 minute power nap around 7:30 last night and slept until 10:00.

I had many intentions toward at least starting the catch up process tonight, but I'm afraid it's going to be another nap night, whether I want to be or not...

(no subject)

Kind of an oof of a day.

I was already a little annoyed with how I anticipated the day to go... Our office was essentially double booked, with a class and a test happening at the same time. The tests would normally happen in the classroom, but can't do that if a class is happening, which means those students have to test in the lobby, which is a lot louder and more crowded and not a great testing environment. When I was doing some prep for that yesterday, my manager acted a bit surprised pikachu about it, and mildly complained that the person who schedules the classes should have noticed and prevented that from happening...
... Except I pointed it out to my manager back in June that we were double-booked for this date. At the time no one had signed up for the test, so I asked if we should request it be removed. I got a kind of snarky response about "I'm not sure why you're even worrying about something months away when no one is even signed up for it, it might not even fill. There's no reason to be worried about it."
(I didn't say anything about that, because for the most part things have been pretty chill with my manager recently, and I don't want to cause tension. It ended up not being a huge deal, but still... I tried to prevent this!)

But then when we got in the truck... it wouldn't start. Not even a sad click. Just nothin'. *sigh*

So I called my mom, and she came to the rescue with her little portable jump start pack...

Except it also wouldn't work. We did get *one* tiny partial turn-over, but it drained the whole pack and didn't quite get started.

*sigh again*

So mom rescue x2: she took me to work, while Alex took the jump pack in to charge back up.

I got to work just as people were starting to arrive for the class, so I don't feel *too* terrible. Still, I was about 45 minutes late, which I hate.

Mom rescue x3: she went back and she and Alex did get the truck jumped, then went to go get a new battery.

She had to help us do this not that long ago. I looked back here, and we replaced our battery back in March of last year. So it lasted less than a year and a half, opposed to the 3-5 years that they're expected to last. Though I know we did buy the cheapest battery option available last time, and driving in hot weather is one of the things most likely to wear it down, and this summer has been very hot. (Not a ton of days topping 100, but lots of sustained periods in the upper 90s.) But still!

Turned out when they went to get a new battery, the employee of the auto parts place came out to look at it, and said "well, the battery you have is the wrong size. It's way too small!"

*sigh again*

So maybe it's good that we got a year+ out of a battery that wasn't large enough for the vehicle?

We now allegedly have a correctly-sized battery, and not the cheapest available. This one even actually comes with a warranty. Hopefully we won't be doing this in another year and a half. Wouldn't have been able to get it without mom's help, so very grateful, even though I wish I didn't have to keep asking for help.

-

Tomorrow I'm going over to Taylor's to hang out for a couple nights. Looking forward to it!

Katydid season!

Last night, as we were watching a really atrociously bad movie, I heard it! The first katydid of the season!

(It was very loud... while I couldn't see it, it must have been on the side of the building somewhere.)

Alex did hear one back in June while I was out of town, but neither of us heard another one since.

Jokingly I told him, as he took Bella out a couple hours later, to "let me know if you see any katydids!"

He came rushing back in about ten minutes later with something closed in his hand, saying "Come quick!"

I'm impressed that on the very first night we heard a katydid, he also found one, haha. He said he nearly stepped on the poor thing, which was sitting on the sidewalk.

So we got one of the katydid habitats set back up real quick. We even had some frozen green beans in the freezer, so heated those up and stuck those on a stick for him, ha.

Greenbean 2!

I believe this is another male, though we haven't heard him click yet. He did chow down on some green beans, though!

None of our katydid eggs from last year ever hatched. It's quite possible that they weren't fertile, as we didn't have the male and female housed together for very long (unless she'd had some relations before we caught her.) I don't know enough about their lifecycle to know if perhaps the eggs require a cold period over the winter, in which case the steady room temperature of the apartment may not have worked for them. Alas.

New titles for Bella!

I mentioned it briefly in my roundup of last week, but never actually posted about it, but...

Bella got two more AKC titles!

She got the first level of the CGC, the "Canine Good Citizen" test, which tests a mix of temperament and training, seeing if the dog behaves politely and obediently, even around unfamiliar people and dogs.

And then, because the CGC counts for a full half of the other test, she also got the first level of "Trick Dog," which really is just... stupid pet tricks, lol.

There are higher levels of both tests, but she now has the lowest levels of both. With a little work, I think she'll be able to get the higher CGC tests completed. Not sure if we'll have her go any farther with trick dog. She absolutely knows plenty of stupid pet tricks, but I don't think she knows *all* the ones they ask for, and we don't really have a reason to teach her those *except* to possibly do those tests.

Some of the upper level CGC tasks are more challenging, but those skills are actually useful to have even outside the test, unlike training to do silly tricks, haha.

The tests were last... Thursday, I think, so I was at work and didn't get to go, but Alex said she did pretty much perfectly on both! I didn't doubt she *could*, but was a little afraid she'd be too excited and flub some of her leash manners or something. She did great!

I was hoping to have ribbons to show off her new titles, but she didn't get any. ;_; Alex isn't sure if the evaluator just forgot, or if she didn't have any. (Though Bella has a FastCAT next week with the same organization that the evaluator is with, so he will ask then. We're hoping to put together a display for all her ribbons, even though I know it's silly, so I'd like to have them if we can!)

The beaft.
